HOW IMPORTANT IS TEACHING MUSIC THEORY?
A basic knowledge of music theory serves students throughout their lifetime. Surveys of adults who have had lessons show adults to be grateful for the theory basics they learned during childhood piano lessons. Those without much theory background often express regret that they did not have more exposure to theory and ear training. A strong theory background gives the student a better sense of music comprehension, and better adaptation among musical styles. Theory provides tools for understanding and participating in popular music. Many students put their theory skills to practice in high school or college jam sessions.
